Event Name: LGBTQ/Hispanic Heritage Speaker Event Locator: 2025-AATBCX Event State: Confirmed Organization: Office of Diversity The Office of Diversity is proud to host Dr. Ernesto Javier Martínez (he/him/el), an award-winning writer, literary critic, and professor at the University of Oregon, as our LGBTQ+ History and Hispanic Heritage Month speaker. Dr. Martínez’s work explores how marginalized communities use storytelling to reclaim their narratives through literature, film, and art. He is the author of On Making Sense and co-editor of Gay Latino Studies. His creative projects include the bilingual children’s book When We Love Someone We Sing to Them and the acclaimed short film La Serenata, licensed by HBO Max. A leader in both academia and media, Dr. Martínez brings a powerful voice to conversations about identity, justice, and representation. Event Name: When Olive Trees Weep Event Locator: 2025-AATBBM Event State: Confirmed Organization: Office of Diversity Join the Office of Diversity for the first installment of the Palestine Film Series, a yearlong exploration of stories from Palestine through the lens of film. We begin with a screening of When Olive Trees Weep, a documentary that centers the lived experiences of Palestinians under occupation, particularly the enduring trauma, resistance, and resilience of women and children. The film’s director will join the post-film discussion. There will be a reception with light refreshments outside of the theater at 5:00 pm. Doors open at 5:30 pm. All are welcome.
